Cheaply made. good for price paid. alittle confusing to use. I should have stuck with the fluke meter.Has alot of uses though.
Customer rating is 5 of 5  Nice and capable meter   2010-01-15

I use this meter for home and hobby troubleshooting. I tested some of the exotic features, and have actually used the temperature probe (to manage high charge rates on a battery) and the frequency meter (when I was experiencing problems with room lights on an electronic controller).
The meter works very well and I am growing to appreciate it beeping at me when I have the wrong leads inserted or in the wrong places when multi-tasking with the meter.
There are lead holders on the back of the meter that let you "stab" and outlet or free up a hand.

This DMM has everything I needed and more. Sure, I'd love to have a comparable Fluke - but this Mastech costs 1/6 of the price. It may be slightly less precise and sturdy, but I doubt most home users would notice a difference. It's built pretty solid for a < $75 DMM. The acoustic, light, temperature and humidity features are a nice bonus. The product is rated for up to 7000 ft. elevation. I'm right on the border of 7000 feet, so if there are any other high altitude geeks out there, this should work for you as well. The included probes are very solid and comfortable - even better than the ones I typically use in the labs at my University.

Now, if only I owned a good power supply, function generator, and oscilloscope; I'd never have to visit the lab again...
Customer rating is 2 of 5  Very disappointing   2009-09-15

I primarily bought this meter for it's non-electrical functions: Sound meter, Thermometer, Humidity, and Luxmeter. I've given it a two-star rating because the other functions may be fine and two of the functions I did test seemed OK.

First, the good news. As a luxmeter it seems accurate and very repeatable. I didn't have a high quality luxmeter to test it against, however. But at least it gave consistent readings. And the relative humidity readings were fairly close to an expensive hygrometer and the specs say it's accurate within 4%

As a thermometer it isn't very good. According to its own documentation, the thermometer is only accurate to +/- 4 degrees. What's really goofy is that it reads out in tenths of a degree. What good is 0.1 resolution when you could be off by as much as 4.0?

The big failure, however, is the sound meter. I checked it against a fairly good meter. If you don't know, there are actually three different decibel weighting systems, A, B, and C. dB(A) is most common and mimics the human ear. My comparison meter reads using both A and C filters. The Mastech doesn't say what filter it's using, but it doesn't match up at all with either one. It was consistently 5 dB above C and 15 dB above A (if it was using the B filter it would be in between the two). When you consider that a 10 dB difference "sounds" twice as loud, even a 5 dB error is horrible.

The sound meter is also terribly jumpy, leaping up and down by 5 dB or more several times each second, making it very difficult to get a reading. Every other dB meter I've used has a button to dampen or slow down the sample rate so you get a smoother reading. Not so with this one.

I had very high hopes for the Mastech. After just an hour's use, however, it's on its way back to Amazon.
Customer rating is 1 of 5  not trustworthy   2009-09-04

I received this unit today and have been testing various power sources, both DC & AC for the last hour. Sometimes it works perfectly and properly presents the appropriate voltage, other times it just starts counting up or down, still other times it does nothing.

Testing the household outlets was the last straw. Voltage fluctuated slightly, but some sockets, that are known to be good, showed no voltage at all, even after many attempts. That's inexcusable. When a meter is off checking AA batteries, it's not a big deal. A person could get killed if the meter doesn't function properly when testing 110VAC power wires and outlets. I can't trust this unit, so back to the dealer it goes.
